It does not get more ordinary than water — when you have been expecting a guest and they come to your house and say “Just water”, you likely feel a burden drop off your shoulders because you really don’t have to do much to give water. It is the most accessible and available thing to give anyone.

Feeling dirty? Use water
Feeling thirsty? Drink water
Feeling hungry? Take more water
Doctor’s best recommendation? Drink plenty water.

Water is such an essential element of life — it sustains, refreshes, and renews. Water is not only essential it is dynamic in its functionality and form.

It’s no coincidence that water is used in Scripture as a symbol of the Word of God, and at times, as an expression of the Holy Spirit. Just as water sustains physical life, the Word sustains spiritual life. David understood this truth when he said:

“In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water, my soul thirsts for You, my flesh longs for You…” (Psalm 63). His greatest desire was not for physical refreshment, but for divine encounter through God’s Word.

Let’s examine two remarkable stories in Scripture illustrate the potency of God’s Word in different circumstances through the symbolism of water:

The first is Elijah’s contest with the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18:20–40). The test was straightforward: the true God would answer by fire. Before calling on God, Elijah drenched the altar and sacrifice with water — so much that it seemed counterproductive. After all, water and fire don’t mix. Yet, when he prayed, fire fell from heaven and consumed everything — even the water. For the first time in history, water became fuel for fire.

This scene mirrors our spiritual life as a believer. At times, consistent devotion to the Word may seem “less spiritual” compared to other more dramatic expressions of faith. However, any spiritual life that has no foundation in the holy scriptures will eventually drift into error and heresy.

If your faith feels shallow, unstable, or dry — introduce the Word of God. It remains the most reliable path to a consistent, vibrant, and healthy spiritual life.

The second story is Jesus’ first miracle at Cana (John 2:1–11). Faced with a potential embarrassment at a wedding, Jesus turned water into wine. What looked ordinary became extraordinary — because the Word intervened.

Scripture further buttresses the dynamic power and potency inherent in the Word of God:

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness.”- 2 Peter 1:3 (NIV).

The Word of God is the key to success — spiritually and even in the natural world. Within it lies the answers to every problem, and with the partnership of the Holy Spirit, you become unstoppable.

Here is an important point to note, interacting with the word of God without the partnership of the Holy spirit makes what you know be of no effect — i.e. you may read that the word of God is light but you still live in darkness, you may have read that the word of God creates atmosphere of abundance but yet you live in lack.

Picture this, in the beginning the earth was without form and darkness covered the earth but yet the surface of earth was covered with water, but light came after the Holy Spirit brooded over the surface of the water.- (Genesis 1:1–3). It is safe to deduce that even when the circumstance feels unredeemable, the ministry of the word and the Holy Spirit can birth redemption out of a seemingly irredeemable situation.

As a believer you must make it a personal commitment to feed daily on God’s Word. When the storms and challenges of life arise, that is not the time to start searching for scriptures; it should be time for the Holy Spirit to brood over the Word you have already hidden in your heart for such a moment as this.

To truly experience the power of God’s Word, engage it with sincerity and the curiosity of a child. Read, meditate, and allow it to transform you — for as you behold the Word, you become what it says.

Finally brethren, immerse yourself so richly in the water of God’s word and see your life gradually and eventually take a turn for good!

Have a blessed week.
